And I'm feeling good (c) Nina Simone June 19, 2020 You’re gonna wanna click on this one… Haha. View this post on Instagram One of the many things that makes being Black a unique experience is our ability to experience joy in spite of the pain we often find ourselves having to deal with in our every day lives. Joy in the face of oppression is, in fact, a form of resistance because it is rooted in embracing community, deprograming self-hatred, reclaiming humanity and owning one's spirit. To be black is to constantly struggle to find balance. In particular the balance between being conscious about what is going on in the world, and also taking a much-needed break from the tragic headlines and hashtags. I just celebrated a birthday and it is not lost on me that to be Black is to be grateful that you were able to see another year on this Earth, but to also carry the weight of knowing how many people won't be afforded that opportunity simply because they look like you. Today I decided to give Black joy and success the same attention that I give our trauma. Black joy is an act of resistance. Setting yourself free is a form of protest. Never underestimate the resilience of Black people. Happy Juneteenth! A post shared by Meezy (@hurtmeezysoul) on Jun 19, 2020 at 9:18pm PDT
