Now although I probably wouldn’t wear this shirt because it has profane language displayed on it… I’m sooooo tempted to buy it!  It’s just how I feel nowadays :-/

You want it too?  Cop it HERE

So STL Saturday!

The St. Paul Sandwich

So I decided that monthly I am going to bring you an STL fact… Because if you don’t know I’m from St. Louis, MO and I love my city!  The first fact is going to be about the origin of the St. Paul sandwich that is found in most if not all “true” St. Louis Chinese food restaurants… Or simply put, the “chinamen” to us STL-ians.

Upon leaving St. Louis I was shocked when I had my first run in with a Chinese food restaurant in Columbus, Ohio on the campus of The Ohio State University.  I ordered shrimp fried rice and was so appalled © Yeezy that my fried rice was a tan color and only had shrimp, peas and carrots in it.  I immediately handed it back and told the kind gentleman that he had given me the wrong order… And he told me I was mistaken…  I knew that I wasn’t gonna eat that, so I figured I’d ask for something I KNEW they couldn’t mess up… A St. Paul sandwich… The guy taking my order then looked at me like I was crazy and said “Um, we don’t sell those here.”  I called my Mom FURIOUS and she said “Mia, you can only get those in St. Louis!”  I replied… “IS THIS SOME KIND OF SICK JOKE!?!?!”

To those that are not STL natives I know you’re probably wondering… What the hell is a St. Paul sandwich?  Well, let me enlighten you… A St. Paul consists of an egg foo young patty (made with minced white onions and bean sprouts) served with pickles, white onion, mayonnaise, lettuce, and tomato all in between two slices of white bread.  Yummyyyyy… If you’re really trying to earn your negreaux card than you’d order it with cheese… COONTASTIC!

Where did the St. Paul come from?  Well, after asking my Mom and several other old folk in the Lou I came up with somewhat of an answer….  My Great Aunt said that the sandwich dates back to the 1940s.  She said it was because back then American’s weren’t really trying to eat at Chinese food restaurants… So they created the St. Paul to make their cuisine appeal to various demographics.

Well, where did the name come from?  I got so many answers from so many different people on this… But one story I distinctly remember was from when I was in High School.  I went on a field trip that gave us a history of St. Louis “staples.”  The tour guide told us that according to local legend, the St. Paul Sandwich was invented by Steven Yuen at Park Chop Suey in Lafayette Square, a neighborhood near downtown St. Louis; Yuen named the sandwich after his hometown of St. Paul, Minnesota…

Hungry yet?  Head to STL and get a St. Paul ASAP… and bring one to me in the Chi :)

Meet me at the altar? (c) Jagged Edge

So THREE of my close friends have gotten engaged this summer… So a wedding rant is long overdue… BUT, before I rant witness below THE CUTEST PROPOSAL OF ALL TIME!

Wasn’t that the most AMAZING proposal everrrr?  *Girly sigh*

So I have a love/hate relationship weddings… I LOVE what they represent and the thought and emotions behind them… But I’ve been to over 15 weddings and nothing in my head differentiate’s one from the other…

They all have the white dresses that in my opinion all look the same with the excessive beading and frills… The music doesn’t change much, the bridesmaids dresses are regular… And they’re overall just blah.

Now those that TRULY know me know that I am a big sap and I truly do look forward to getting married one day… But I have warned my Mom that my wedding is going to straddle the line of traditional/classy… and well, ridiculous.  She simply replied “I wouldn’t expect any less from you Mia…”  I WILL tell you that their will be no beads or sequints involved if I have my way lol.

I know this post has gone over a lot of things that I DON’T like… Well, here’s what I DO LIKE.  If I’m ever lucky/financially stable enough I would love for Monique Lhuillier to design my dress… If not I’m just gonna find a crack head that works for cheap to help me bootleg her designs… I’d love for the back to look something like this….  But not the front or bottom half… that’s too slutastic for a wedding dress…

And the overall décor to mimmick Shanna Moakler’s dress which is just BEAUTIOUS! Lol.  So I’ve been wanting some sort of black sash on my dress since high school (Ask Richard Penn for verification) and I blame Monique for making sashes the “in thing” now… So much for me being original lol.

Check out Travis and Shanna’s Wedding in this clip…

As for rings… I dunno, this would take all day… I’m a fan of the princess cut… I like the trillion cut as well… Baguettes are cool… But nothing too extra!  I’m a simple girl…  But I DO KNOW that I do not want my future fiance’ to go to Kay Jeweler’s or some other overpriced jewelry chain… Just hit up Carol Ann, she’ll tell you where to go… Those places are a rip-off… and don’t even get me started on their financing options… I would hope that my fiance’ is smarter than that… Save some money on the ring and put it towards starting our life together…

**Just a lil wedding rant…**….And now I leave you with some unusual wedding pics

Tell All Tuesday (c) Bobby G and Moi

In college my friend Rob and I would tell each other something about the other that no one else knew every Tuesday… Corny right?

Well, I decided to incorporate that idea into my blog with a little twist… Instead of giving you info about myself, on Tuesday once a month I will tell you something about someone that I feel is pretty amazing… So, with that being said the first “honoree” so to speak is going to be…

Blake Mycoskie (I’m not gonna lie, I picked the picture above of Blake solely because I love Maggie’s dress)

I was familiar with TOMS Shoes but it wasn’t until I moved to Chicago that I realized how big it was… They were literally EVERYWHERE!  Not familiar?  Well here’s a little back story…

TOMS Shoes is an American footwear company that was founded in 2006 which ALSO operates a non-profit subsidiary… And with every pair sold, TOMS donates a new pair of shoes to a child in need… Pretty awesome idea right?  The best part is… It actually WORKS!  I know with the “livestrong” bracelets, etcetera people were seeing charity becoming “trendy” and considered that to be a bad thing…but I’m supportive if it’s making an impact… And TOMS definitely does…

In 2006 alone, TOMS Shoes distributed 10,000 pairs of shoes in Argentina.  In November 2007, the company distributed 50,000 pairs of shoes to children in South Africa… And as of April 2009, TOMS Shoes had distributed 140,000 pairs of shoes to children in Argentina, Ethiopia, South Africa as well as children in the United States.  The company announced in April 2010 that they had given over 600,000 pairs of new shoes to children in need around the world.

For the 2nd year in a row on April 18, 2010,  I participated in TOMS’ “One Day Without Shoes.” The challenge is for people worldwide to go a day without shoes in order to raise awareness for the millions of children who go without shoes every day. According to http://www.OneDayWithoutShoes.com over 250,000 people across the globe went barefoot on April 18th in support of TOMS One Day Without Shoes.

Head over to Blake’s personal blog for more inspiration at http://blakemycoskie.blogspot.com/ and then you better get a pair of your own at http://www.toms.com  RIGHT NOW! :-p

Hmmm (c) Lyfe Jennings

Well, it looks like the one of the most ignant niggas that I know has struck again… (look at this pic for instance… He is holding a plastic cup.. that’s like 2 notches above posing with a 40oz).  It seems as if STL-ians have been getting into it with D-list celebrities a lot over twitter lately… First time around a few of my friends were beefin with Lil Mo (I don’t even know why she bothered verifying her account, it’s 2010…I think it’s safe to say no one would be trying to infiltrate twitter to pose as her… Now in 2000… MAYBE… On second thought… NAH).  Anyway, this time around it seems as if my own fam has gotten into a twitter beef with Lyfe Jennings… Check out the correspondence between the two that occurred today below

It all started with this tweet from Eric: @elathamII “@KytheRHOgue: Lyfe Jennings bugs the hell out of me. I disagree with the statistics, where did he get these numbers from?< right”

Lyfe: @elathamII sound like u want ya sister to…why let her suffer so u can get some coochie???

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 1 I don’t have a sister 2 your statistics were bullshit facts you made up & 3 NIGGA EAT A DICK! Ole non singin ass nigga

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 and hold up…BITCH DID YOU REFER TO MY MAMA?! Nigga go GOLD & then you can tweet me ole regular ass nigga

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 nigga I’m not talkin singles I’m talkin records! N nigga at the end of the day my Mother has had more success in her field

Lyfe: @elathamII that’s what people like about me, I am regular. Plus I got one plat and two gold under my belt, but no hate or twitter rage. Tell ya mom I said hello I’m sure she respects what I do…

Lyfe: @elathamII I don’t wann break no news but….

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 than you in yours my kind sir you can google her Cheryl Latham. And she’s the one who pointed out that your stats are bull

Lyfe: @elathamII and I’m happy for her I’m sure she has God in her life. God will make u a success just like the devil will make u a twitterer…

Lyfe: @elathamII now why r u givin ya moms name out on twitter!!?? Polish up young lady.

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 first of all I’m a man, and my mother isn’t worried about her name on twitter cuz its all over the city of St. Louis

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 so I hate to break no news to you but when you made songs that made sense I fucked wit em but this new bullshit sounds like up to think that they’re better than they really are. Quit helpin make US black man the bad guy n make some shit that equally represents what actually goes on out here n the real world

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 and nigga when they start lettin prisoners get twitter? Aint you still locked up?

Lyfe: @elathamII do u think you sister or niece feel the same? Or do u want them to have a trffiin nigga that beat em? She needs this and ill sacrifice some coochie before I sacrifice her…sorry.

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 nigga ion got no mufuckin sister! My niece has enough sense 2keep her legs closed, she didn’t need a song to teach her morals

Lyfe: @elathamII and ima tell yo mama you was cussin too!

Eric: “@Lyfeonline419: @elathamII and ima tell yo mama you was cussin too!” and ima tell yo P.O. You been smokin weed

Lyfe: @elathamII ok cool fam I got a show there on the 8th you can tell me all your problems with my music then. But u gotta buy a ticket to get to me…peace and God speed brother..

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 nigga I’m not finna pay to hear yo bullshit! But I’ll be in the parkin lot you can rap wit me there bruh

Eric: @Lyfeonline419 According to the state of Georgia, Chester Bamsu (Lyfe) Jennings is $7,326 past due on child support payments #Statistics”

Poor Eric was blocked my Mr. Jennings after this tweet… Smh. #ThingsWeakNiggasDo.

It's what you all been waiting for ain't it? (c) Yeezy

I heard an interview with Lauryn Hill on NPR and I instantly got excited!  Unfortunately I was on my “blog hiatus” so I regret not bringing this info to you sooner… HOWEVER, I was lucky enough to find some of the text of the interview and the full recorded interview online so I figured I’d share it…

On Why She Stopped Putting Out Music:
“There were a number of different reasons. But partly, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, personal-growth things, that I had to go through in order to feel like it was worth it. In fact, as musicians and artists, it’s important we have an environment — and I guess when I say environment, I really mean the [music] industry, that really nurtures these gifts. Oftentimes, the machine can overlook the need to take care of the people who produce the sounds that have a lot to do with the health and well-being of society, or at least some aspect of society. And it’s important that people be given the time that they need to go through, to grow, so that the consciousness level of the general public is properly affected. Oftentimes, I think people are forced to make decisions prematurely. And then that sound radiates.”

On People’s Attraction to Her:
Believe it or not, I think what people are attracted to about me, if anything, is my passion. People got exposed to my passion through music and song first. I think people might realize, you know, ‘We love the way she sounds, we love the music, but I think we just love how fearless she is. How boundless she is, when it comes to what she wants to do.’ And I think that can be infectious.”

On Her Voice:
“I’m trying to open up my range and really sing more. With The Fugees initially, and even with Miseducation, it was very hip-hop — always a singing over beats. I don’t think people have really heard me sing out. So if I do record again, perhaps it will have an expanded context. Where people can hear a bit more.”
