As I was in the mirror painting the wonderful Picasso known as my face, and frantically updating my Twitter (woe is me and my social-networking web addiction), it had occured to me that this summer marks a milestone: TEN YEARS that Mia and I have been good, great, best friends! We have known each other from what seems like the beginning of time. She met YaGirlB when I was innocent and a little shy and awkward (Now those memories are ours alone, and not for sharing...) walking into summer school at METRO. The first time I met Mia, she was as nice, kind, and engaging as she is now. Instantly, we were inseparable, and were partners in crime. Our energy and personalities bounced off of each other. And, as I moved on to another high school, and we were soon separated by thousands of miles, one thing has never changed: the bond of friendship (and we can not forget humor) that we have. So, here is a tribute to one of the nearest and dearest people to my heart; ten things that Mia has taught and shown me throughout the ten years of our friendship:
1) Redefined the definition of cool, hip, and hot for a woman in jeans.. Although I may sex up my hoodies and Nike dunks, it is a look that has always originated with her.
2) Mia was the type of person who was universal: she could relate to any and everybody. I learned to be, in some aspects, a great personal and social politician and networker.
3) Number three is... one word: MAC. Every since she showed me her MAC clear lipglass, I secretly took note (I am bankrolling a couple of MAC make-up artists income because of Mia)
4) The swoop: I jocked Mia on the low in LA for awhile. The long bang swooped over the left eye was (and still is) a signature Mia look. And, I have to give credit to the originator (also, because she did catch me and front me out!)
5) We can stop talking for six hours... days... weeks.... months... No matter what time it is, we can start talking again, and it's just like we left off.
6) Beef-n-Noodles at Chong Wah and Cajun Grill Bourbon Chicken Caesar salads at the Galleria
7) In high school, there was a party every week. And, every week, there was a mad dash to figure out what to wear. You had to look different at every party you went to (who would want to be caught at the Monsanto Y party wearing the same thing you wore to the Kappa House party a week or two ago). Mia taught me (maybe not in the grand fashion that I celebrate it in) that it's okay to have a shopping addiction (and to always seem to have an outfit that you've never worn before that you've just pulled out of nowhere).
8) The 'Back that ass up' dance... the left/right/left/right syncronized hip moves. We had it all planned, but made it all look so natural and effortless.
9) I can't not have a 'Ten things' and not talk about the notebook.. Often imitated, never duplicated (the original is with the former principal of Metro, who I think either kept it for entertainment, or sold it to Tina Fey for Mean Girls... cause their 'burn book' scenario sounded awfully familiar)... I mean; it's been so long, I can't even remember the notebook. I wish I could, because it was classic material (pictures... code names... I think that's where it all started)
10) Mia was always about hooking a friend up (passes, free concert tickets, getting in free to the club/parties...). Mia even attempted to hook me up with one of her friends, (who, at the time, was clearly out of my league) that I lusted after. If I only would've taken advantage of that opportunity, Rocky would be my husband right now! Thanks for looking out Mia!
Mia was one of the most popular girls anyone knew; whether it was the grey eyes, the swoop, the micros. Everyone wanted to be her friend and be close to her (some of which were simply trying to reap the rewards), but I am privileged to say that she has been a best friend for ten years. Can't wait to see where the next ten years of our friendship takes us. - B

IRRESPONSIBLE WHITE PERSON WEDNESDAY!!
This Columbus, Ohio firefighter killed his two dogs because he didn't want to have to pay to have them boarded while he went on vacation. Yes, you read right. He suspended them from his basement ceiling and fired shots of his .22 caliber into their bodies... because he didn't want to find a dogsitter...So, I mean he's atleast gonna get a significant amount of time in jail right? After the Michael Vick incident it's clear that law enforcement doesn't take harming animals lightly...Right? Well not necessarily... Santuomo was sentenced "to 90 days in jail, to be served in 10-day increments over the next two years. He also has to pay $4,500 in restitution, perform 200 hours of community service, stay away from companion animals for five years and write a letter of apology to be published in the local newspaper and the International Association of Firefighters magazine."
ALBUM REVIEWWWW
Artist: Maxwell
Album: BLACKsummers'night
Release date: July 7,2009
It is tradition that, to get in the mood for a new cd, I listen to the previous cd of the particular artist. And, with Maxwell's cd, it was no exception (although his music is music that constantly stays in rotation).
Listening to Maxwell's Now cd, in anticipation for the delightful sounds of BLACKsummers'night, I started to become taken over by feelings of soul, maturity, funk, love, and blues. I don't get that feeling often at all nowadays unless I am reminiscing about the good old days of music actually being about something (It's still out there... unfortunately, to get to it, you have to kiss someone thru the phone and go through unnecessary birthday sex). It seems like the artists of the Neo-Soul era, the last classic era of rhythm & blues music, have fallen through the cracks (D'Angelo... that one was for you, my fallen brutha), and given way to these cookie-cutter, radio-friendly freakfests of songs (usually assisted by our good friend, the Auto-tone).
Maxwell is the undisputed king of Neo-Soul. His albums are like a timeline of growth and maturity: we begin with Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite, which is a sexy, sensuous journey through what could be called the rollercoasters of twentysomething (filled with passionate meetings, sensuous sex, and post-coital bliss) romance and love (and sex). Then we move to Embrya, which decribes growth, transition, moving towards maturity. It was a very organic album, paying tribute to the soul of the 70s. He left us with Now, in 2001, which was, compared to Urban Hange Suite, a journey through more mature love and adulthood.
Eight years later, Maxwell brings us BLACKsummers'night, the first in a trilogy of three albums, to be released over the course of the next three summers. This album is definitely a welcome to this summer of less than stellar R&B and soul. The lead single off the album is 'Pretty Wings' which tells the tale of love at the wrong time. The simple melody (complete with bell/wind chime effects) and Maxwell's falsetto make this an instant summer classic for those summer jams or club nights where the DJ needs to slow it down. Like albums in the past, this album is about love, although on a different note. There aren't any tracks seducing the listener's earlobes or wedding songs (ala 'This Woman's Work'), but of mature love. No stand-out stories; just a harmonious tale of the trials and tribulations of mature love. 'Bad Habits' (my favorite track) and 'Stop the World' are on the slower, melodic side, while 'Love Is' exhibits injections of 70s era funk. 'Playing Possum' is another good track, about love that is gone, and cannot come back.
Although I would've liked a couple of more tracks on this album, a 9-track Maxwell is more valuable musically than the marjority of these 15/16 track albums put out by the R&B artists of today. This albums serves as a reminder that Neo-Soul is not dead, and will be resurrected to push out the influx of replaceable R&B artists (I'm pretty sure that Trey Songz, T-Pain, and Jeremih are a little nervous now). Buy BLACKsummers'night and you will not be disappointed at all. It will definitely entertain those dark and black summer's night.

Dear Los Angeles and media outlets,
To Los Angeles: As I sit here and watch the sensationalized (but oddly respectable and well put together) spectacle that is the Michael Jackson funeral, I applaud you for putting the bill (a whopping four million dollars) off on the tax payers, taking it out of our emergency discretion/action fund. Los Angeles, we are at a five-hundred million dollar deficit. Don't think that by blinding us with the flashing lights of the paparazzi and the star-studded tribute... I want to know how exactly we're going to be paying for this... Since we cannot seem to pay for anything now.
To all of the media (CNN, NBC, MTV, E! News, Entertainment Tonight, rag mags, etc., gossip sites): When will we let Michael Jackson rest in peace? I am tired of waking up to a recycled Michael Jackson stories. I don't care about the paternity of his kids or the custody battle that you keep shoving down my throat. And if you all bring up the child molestation cases, I'm gonna scream. He is the biggest music star ever; an icon of many decades who defined, redefined, and continues to define music, media, and pop culture a like. Let's report on things that are CURRENT, relevant news: the flailing economy, war, the poverish state of our cities. Tributes are one thing, but the constant rehashing of Michael Jackson stories and the rehashing of every little thing he's ever done is enough. And so I say thank you - your news stories on Bubbles, his skin condition and the analysis of his plastic surgery have been days of my life that I will never get back (because it's taken over EVERY media outlet). It's sad that falling ratings and viewership has resulting to the continuous assault and slaying of our fallen musical icon and genius.
